The Karl and Jean

A few years ago, the Dolphin Club’s boatbuilder, Jon Bielinski, took on the restoration of the boat that became known as the Karl and Jean. Karl and Jean Kortum founded the San Francisco Maritime Museum and collected this boat. It was a late gold rush era ship’s tender, likely built in Australia, since the green bent parts were of gum wood. The original planking is of Ocatillo from South America. Over the years, I volunteered, giving at least 25 Mondays to the restoration. It is a lovely boat, but she is a chubby double ender. The original planks are longer on one side versus the other, and I joke that she sails straight in the Southern Hemisphere.
